Why we rated Optimum Nutrition #2*

Most popular & top-rated protein powder at GNC

Cheapest price per serving, making it a very good value

24g protein and 5g BCAAs per serving

ON Gold Standard

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard protein powders are some of the most popular products on the market today, and for good reason. ON has been in business for over 30 years and creates some of the most popular health and fitness products for super affordable prices. On top of that, they are the top-rated protein at GNC. Read on to see why we put ON Gold Standard protein powders 2nd on our comparison list.

“What’s in ON Gold Standard?”

The whole point of protein powder is to obtain macronutrients to support your body’s natural preservation and regeneration of your muscles whether you are a gym rat or an occasional jogger. ON Gold Standard protein powders boast 24 grams of protein and 5 grams of BCAAs per serving. This is pretty standard for your average protein powder, but the prices are cheaper than most other companies’ powders, giving you more value for each scoop. Personally, I don’t mind spending a little bit more for my protein powder, but if you’re just starting with protein powder, or don’t use it enough to need specialization, ON Gold Standard’s value is great.

One of the biggest problems that we have with ON Gold Standard’s protein powder is that it does contain soy, one of the most prolific allergens in the food world. As we learn more about soy, we are finding that it has many negative effects on the body. One of the most compelling reasons to avoid soy is that it contains plant estrogens that closely mimic the body’s natural estrogen hormones. This can cause gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction in males and cases as severe as breast cancer in women.

If that wasn’t enough, it also contains sucralose, also known as Splenda, for sweetness. Sucralose has been linked to increased cancer risk (study link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27078173/) though more studies need to be run to confirm this. It also contains milk ingredients, so if you are dairy-free or have a dairy allergy, this protein powder may not be for you.

“How Are ON’s Flavors?”

I think all protein powder enthusiasts can agree that there are only so many times one can choke down a chalky, plain vanilla protein shake. We were pleasantly surprised, however, with the sheer number of flavors (40!) that ON Gold Standard offers; the most flavors available by any brand on our comparison list. I have tried multiple of these, but my favorite is “Peppermint Mocha”, and my SO’s is “Cake Donut”.

Overall, the taste of ON Gold Standard protein powders is satisfying and rich, but the texture does retain a bit of that chalky, gritty texture that we all know about.

The Bottom Line

ON Gold Standard protein powder has been a best-seller for decades and for good reason. It does contain some harmful ingredients, but the value is unbeatable and is a great protein for beginners and experts. It tastes great and has a huge number of flavors that will suit anyone’s preference.
